In Guanajuato, like in all Mexico, the day of deads is a reason to celebrate. From our ancestors where the death meant celebration, abundance, offering to the Gods; now year by year we celebrate the visit of our dear beings who are not longer with us.
The altar for deads is a Mexican tradition, an offering made to the spirits who visit us this day. It is placed a photography of the person to whom is done the offering and the food and drinks that were their favorites while he still alive.
You must not forget the four basic elements of the nature:
- Earth, doing ways for the easy arrival of the spirits and also represented in the fruits that gives us.
- Air, represented in the movement, Chinese paper in orange and violet is used, called “papel picado”.
- Water, so the spirit calms his thirst after the long trip.
- Fire, represented by candles that indicate the way to the altar.
There are also used other elements in the altar like copal and salt for purification, flowers of zempoaxochitl are used to facilitate the arrival and the way of these souls.
In most of the houses of Guanajuato and in some public places the traditional altar is placed. In the San Fernando Plaza it's all a celebration. The traditional crafts of dead are sold: dolls, skulls and masks of wood and cardboard, the typical candies like alfeñiques that are made with sugar with forms of fruits and skulls; and the traditional died bread made only in these holidays.
Guanajuato city attracts thousands of tourists who share this religious celebration, catholic and native, where the main thing is to celebrate life after the death.
