Yuriria Lagoon Print E-mail
Image Yuriria is a term that derives from the purépecha word  "Yuririapúndaro" that means “lake of blood”. Fray Diego de Chávez y Alvarado constructed the artificial lagoon of Yuriria in 1552, for regulate the avenues of the Lerma river. The mentioned friar made construct a channel to turn aside waters of the river towards the glass, and an edge to contain them; this edge was denominated Taramatacheo.
 
The lagoon of Yuriria is located in the municipality of the same name, and it is located at 1750 ms of altitude; it has a surface of 97 km 2 with an average depth of 2,60 ms and capacity of 225 million m 3.
 
The area is located in the subprovince of the High and Low Michoacanos, which is part of the Neovolcanic Axis ; this province extends in the half south of the state of Guanajuato and includes part of the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Querétaro, Hidalgo and Puebla.
