Celaya

ImageCelaya is an ancient settlement whose importance is reflected in the founding of important and monumental monasteries such as San Francisco, El Carmen and St. Agustin, this last one currently hosting the Casa de la Cultura Francisco Eduardo Tres Guerras, named in homage to famous architect who was one of the greatest glories of Mexican neoclassical. This city offers permanently an interesting and varied cultural agenda, plus a wide range of tourist services, and excellence of its gastronomy.

Location

Its height above sea level is 1,750 meters. It limits to the north with Comonfort, the east by Apaseo el Grande and Apaseo el Alto, to the south Tarimoro, to the west with Cortazar and Villagrán and the Northwest with Santa Cruz de Juventino Rosas. The climate is warm throughout the year. The average annual temperature is 18.8°C. It has a population of 415,869 inhabitants according to census 2005.

ImageCelaya, is known as the "Golden Gate of Bajío" because of the large boom in its industrial development, agriculture, livestock and trade. The word is Zalaya has its origin in the and means "Tierra Llana” (“Plain Earth”). On October 12, 1570 Celaya was established as the first Villa in the Bajio, as called Villa of Our Lady of the Purisima Concepción of Zalaya. Later in 1658 was awarded with the title of Very Noble and Fair City by the Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva. In a short time assumed the role of supplier of mining centre, due to the cereal production covering local needs and achieved good surpluses for the regional market.
On September 2, 1810 named at Cura Hidalgo: Captain General of the Insurgent Army and Ignacio Allende: Lieutenant General. In this event many residents of Celaya allied to the cause of freedom. This event is commemorated with "Monumento a la Patria y el Ejército Libertador", which is one side of the temple of San Antonio. In Celaya was fought in April 1915, one of the most important battles of the Mexican Revolution, between the forces of General of the Obregón and Northern Centauri, General Villa, a result of this confrontation was the triumph of the Constitutionalist side.
The difficult post-revolutionary years undoubtedly affected Celaya. However, from the 1400’s began a resurgence of the city. His large population growth and its participation in the processes of urbanization and industrial development and tourism with the architectural works of recognized Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras have placed it among the most important cities in the state, besides having an excellent location and easy access to their two-lane roads. 
 
  • ImageIt is one of the largest and most beautiful in Mexico. The interior shows the baroque style of the seventeenth century. The facade of the cloister is plateresque style.
  • ImageA masterpiece of architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras born in 1759 in this city. This temple was built from 1802 to 1807. It's neoclassical architecture.
  • ImageQuarry construction dating from the early seventeenth century. It was the municipal jail until 1961.
  • ImageAlso known as "Bola de Agua" (Ball of Water), has a capacity of 1000m3 and has become the symbol of the city.
  • ImageMuseum recently created exposing 22 mummified bodies and includes explanation of the process of mummification.
  • ImageThe crafts by local artisans include shape and color to the traditional toy, cardboard masks as alebrijes (Mexican folk art). They make out of paper lanterns and balloons with frames of reeds.
