Irapuato is identified as the Strawberry Capital of the World, which is one of the largest producers of the country. It has an important place in the State for its textile and agro-industrial development. High quality export vegetables are produced on its fertile fields. With an excellent location, Irapuato is an ancient city that achieved some significance during the viceroyalty; important buildings from this period are preserved, especially some monumental religious icons characterized by their well-accomplished and interesting Baroque details. Currently, Irapuato is a city that bet to modernity, besides the attractions that offers its renewed historic downtown. This destination has excellent and varied cuisine and hosting services, not to mention the INFORUM: modern compound that ensures the success in implementing conventions and exhibitions.
Irapuato adjoins on the north by the municipalities of Silao and Guanajuato, to the west with Salamanca, to the south with Abasolo. The city of Irapuato is connected through its highways with the major cities of the State and the whole country.
Within the most important hydrological flows are the rivers of Silao and Guanajuato, besides the dams El Conejo, La Gavia, La Llave, and La Purisima.
The climate is warm, with an average annual temperature of 19.6°C.
The total population in the census of 2005 was 463,103.
The first settlers that arrived to Irapuato were from the ethnic group called Chichimeca. Some time later when the tribe was displaced by the Tarasco, imposed the name of Xiriquitzio or Iriquitzio, word that the Spanish conquerors pronounced "Jiricuicho." Its residents call Jiricuato Tarasco eventually, which means "Hill that emerges from the plains."
In the year 1556, when the Spaniards arrive, born as a place for ranching and agricultural center due to the fertility of its soil, allowing the place to become one of the main food suppliers for the residents of the surroundings. On April 30, 1875 obtained the title of town and in 1893 became a city.
The revolutionary armies such as Villistas, Zapatistas, Carranca, crossed by the city of Irapuato repeatedly. The city of Irapuato is currently an industrial, commercial and very active in organizing conferences, conventions and sporting events. In its fields are produced high quality vegetables for export, especially the production of strawberries, broccoli and asparagus, among others.
